This book presents an ethical theory for financial transactions that underpins the stability of modern economies. It combines elements from history, ethics, economics and mathematics to show how these combined can be used to develop a pragmatic theory of financial markets. Written in three sections; section one examines the co-evolution of finance and mathematics in an ethical context by focusing on three periods: pre-Socratic Greece, Western Europe in the thirteenth century and North-western Europe in the seventeenth century to demonstrate how the historical development of markets and finance were critical in the development of European ideas of science and democracy. Section two interprets the evidence presented in section one to provide examples of the norms reciprocity, sincerity and charity and introduce the pragmatic theory. Section three uses the pragmatic theory to interpret recent financial crises, address emergent phenomena and relate the theory to alternative contemporary theories of markets. Presenting a unique synthesis of mathematical and behavioural approaches to finance this book provides explicit ethical guidance that will be of interest to academics and practitioners alike.

Kimiya was born in India, but from a young age, she felt as though she didnt belong. Some of her earliest memories were premonitions of trivial events that may have had to do with past lives. For a young girl, it was bewildering to consider the possibility of living in different worlds or dimensions simultaneouslyto move back and forth in time and see and hear what others could not. She was locked in a stillness of knowing and yet not knowing and grew accustomed to living in silence with her ghosts, some harmless, some malicious. It was only when she came to realize that she was not alone, that her experiences were not unique, that she decided to talk about her special gift. She began to mentally replay her life, recollecting her experiences of slipping in and out of her body, weaving in and out of time. She recalled premonitions, astral travel, swirling from planet to planet, and other inexplicable events, to the point where she began to doubt her sanity.

Examining the self is at the heart of coaching and this book provides a comprehensive overview of knowledge on the Self from psychology, philosophy and other disciplines. Developmental Coaching outlines a theory of individual development, with practical applications for coaches. The Development of Self in Action (DSA) theory provides a credible explanation of the individual functioning, desired changes and development that makes developmental coaching a rigorous, theory-based approach to practice. Building on the influential first edition of this text, Bachkirova enriches and refines the book with even further conceptual clarity and hands-on advice. These theoretical and practical approaches have been used and tested for over a decade, not only in the actual delivery of developmental coaching, but also in many teaching programmes, numerous masterclasses and coaching supervision internationally. This new edition also offers an additional section on professional development and coaching supervision for coaches in the area. This book will be an invaluable resource for students on coaching programmes and coaching practitioners who are keen to understand more about developmental coaching and why it works. “This is the best book written so far about coaching, in my humble opinion, because it is so deeply considered, so original and intelligent, so relevant to practising coaches, and so useful to those seeking practical wisdoms.” Dr Paul Lawrence, Director Leading Systemically & Honorary Research Associate Oxford Brookes University, UK “Tatiana masterfully interweaves a rich discussion of the scientific and philosophical foundations of her DSA model with practical tools and implications for coaches.” Angela Passarelli, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Management, College of Charleston, USA “Tatiana Bachkirova greatly enriches our understanding of both client and coach.” Mary Watts, Emeritus Professor of Psychology, City, University of London, UK Praise from the 1st Edition: This book is a rare beast in the developmental area of coaching – intelligent, articulate and accessible … Dr Bachkirova’s work combines and extends many existing developmental approaches, making previously opaque frameworks tangible and real. Anthony Grant, Director of the Coaching Psychology Unit, University of Sydney, Australia Tatiana Bachkirova is Professor of Coaching Psychology and Co-Director of the International Centre for Coaching and Mentoring Studies at Oxford Brookes University, UK. She is a recognised international speaker and her many publications include over 70 research and conceptual papers as well as edited volumes.

A BOOK OF THE YEAR GUARDIAN, THE ECONOMIST, NEW STATESMAN, FINANCIAL TIMES, BLOOMBERG Anil Seth's radical new theory of consciousness challenges our understanding of perception and reality, doing for brain science what Dawkins did for evolutionary biology. 'A brilliant beast of a book.' DAVID BYRNE 'Hugely important.' JIM AL-KHALILI 'Masterly . . . An exhilarating book: a vast-ranging, phenomenal achievement that will undoubtedly become a seminal text.' GAIA VINCE, GUARDIAN Being You is not as simple as it sounds. Somehow, within each of our brains, billions of neurons work to create our conscious experience. How does this happen? Why do we experience life in the first person? After over twenty years researching the brain, world-renowned neuroscientist Anil Seth puts forward a radical new theory of consciousness and self. His unique theory of what it means to 'be you' challenges our understanding of perception and reality and it turns what you thought you knew about yourself on its head. 'Seth thinks clearly and sharply on one of the hardest problems of science and philosophy, cutting through weeds with a scientist's mind and a storyteller's skill.' ADAM RUTHERFORD 'A page-turner and a mind-blower . . . Beautifully written, crystal clear, deeply insightful.' DAVID EAGLEMAN 'If you read one book about conciousness, it must be Seth's.
