Bioimpedance and Bioelectricity Basics 4th edition is the only book that discusses in detail dielectric and electrochemical aspects, as well as electrical engineering concepts of network theory. This provides a cross-disciplinary resource for engineers, life scientists and physicists. It takes readers from an introductory (postgraduate) level to a developed understanding of core dielectric and electrochemical aspects of bioelectricity, combined with the necessary electrical engineering concepts, such as network theory, to allow readers to work effectively across the interface of biology, physics and engineering. The book has a highly effective organization, and covers important concepts relating to bioelectricity and impedance, including finite element analysis, endogenic sources, control theory, tissue electrical properties, and invasive measurements. With its concentration on instrumentation and system design, data and analysis, the book is suited to readers with an applied focus on experimentation and device development. It paves an easier and more efficient way for readers seeking basic knowledge about this discipline. This book’s focus is on systems with galvanic contact with tissue, and the importance of the geometry of the measuring system cannot be overemphasized. The authors are internationally recognized experts in the field. In order to truly understand the area, a certain knowledge of electrochemistry, electronic engineering, physics, physiology, mathematics and model thinking is needed. All of these features can be found in the chapters of this book. New pedagogical features support learning and make this an ideal text for teaching Now includes more content on electrochemistry, cyclic voltammetry, amperometry, cell properties and machine learning Covers tissue immittance building up from the basics in an accurate and easy to understand manner, supported with figures and examples. Geometry and instrumentation are also covered.

This book examines non-invasive, electrical-based methods for disease diagnosis and assessment of heart function. In particular, a formalized signal model is proposed since this offers several advantages over methods that rely on measured data alone. By using a formalized representation, the parameters of the signal model can be easily manipulated and/or modified, thus providing mechanisms that allow researchers to reproduce and control such signals. In addition, having such a formalized signal model makes it possible to develop computer tools that can be used for manipulating and understanding how signal changes result from various heart conditions, as well as for generating input signals for experimenting with and evaluating the performance of e.g. signal extraction methods. The work focuses on bioelectrical information, particularly electrical bio-impedance (EBI). Once the EBI has been measured, the corresponding signals have to be modelled for analysis. This requires a structured approach in order to move from real measured data to the model of the corresponding signals. This book proposes a generic framework for this procedure. It can be used as a guide for modelling impedance cardiography (ICG) and impedance respirography (IRG) signals, as well as for developing the corresponding bio-impedance signal simulator (BISS).
