The present study (edition, translation and commentary) of the fragments expressing interest oin the lives of wise men, philosophers, poets and politicians shed light on the various antecedents of Greek biographical writing in the fifth and forth centuries B.C.
Collection of and commentary on the fragments of 856 Greek historians whose works have survived only in fragmentary form. Includes over 12,000 fragments from sources going up to the Byzantine period. CD-Rom edition presents the collection as completed by Jacoby in 1958, consisting of three parts, originally issued in fifteen print volumes. All fragments and commentaries are fully searchable and extensive indexes and links are provided.
These three indexes of ancient authors first place all sources of fragments in a list alphabetized by author and work, then follow the order of presentation found in Jacoby, and finally place the authors of fragments in alphabetical order, giving under each one an alphabetized list of authors who cite him.
The Jacoby is the standard collection of ancient Greek historiographical sources. This CD-ROM edition makes this unique reference tool available in a much-needed, easy to use format for the first time.
