It looks beyond the confines of the EU proper and combines interesting and relevant case studies from a broader pan-European perspective. Although interest in spatial growth regressions has been growing in recent years, formal theoretical approaches that acknowledge the role of space in economic growth have been sparse. In particular in a regional context, the assumption of independent, non-interacting closed economies can lead to misinterpretations. This book fills the void by discussing neoclassical growth theory in a spatial context, in order to examine growth both theoretically and empirically in a system of N regional economies. A formal model is presented that allows for interregional fixed capital relocations, which are in turn determined by the economies’ relative locations in space. It is shown how initial endowments with human capital play a decisive role regarding the evolution of output, and how both convergence and divergence processes may occur. Using a spatial econometric model specification, the theoretical model is tested empirically for 255 European regions.

This book concerns EU Cohesion Policy and the economic convergence of underdeveloped regions in Italy and Spain from the first programming period to the present: it investigates the political and institutional factors that determine the success or failure of implementing EU Cohesion Policy at national and sub-national level, as well as their impact on economic growth. On the wave of the American tradition of development studies, this book suggests that public policy analysis can be fruitful for understanding economic growth and cohesion, if it were to reconstruct domestic public interventions for development and the institutional characteristics of the subjects responsible for pursuing development goals. To do so, this book derives its theoretical foundations from the traditional debate on the role of state actors in promoting economic development and on the institutional characteristics that the public authorities involved in the process of economic development should display. More precisely, by adopting an Hirschmanian approach to development, it elaborates an original framework to compare different Cohesion Policy implementations and to understand its economic results in different countries, using Italy and Spain as pilot studies.
This title was first published in 2001. In the framework of the EU, a number of policies have been devised for regions in order to facilitate their balanced economic development. The author argues that the focus on regional planners and their actions in academic literature has obscured the importance of regional elites in this process. The author compares Western Scotland and the west of Crete, focusing on the wider regional political and business elites within these regions, and attempting a comparison of elite attitudes within regions and between regions.
Edited by three European editors and spanning across Europe, this excellent study focuses on the effects of the European integration process on the inter-regional division of labour in both western and Eastern European countries. Using extensive empirical analysis of the changes of regional specialization over a period of two decades, observing its causes and consequences the authors show economic integration as a relocation of resources across sectors and space. The authors argue that the resulting challenge to both regional and social cohesion in the enlarged European Union may require a reorientation of cohesion policy at European, national and local levels. Disaggregated national data sets with respect to both the sectoral and spatial levels are combined with an analysis of both regional structural change and the role of foreign direct investment in this process. This book will be of great interest to post graduate students and researchers interested in international trade and regional economics as well as policy makers engaged with regional and structural changes at both a European and national level.

En este libro, primero de una trilogía sobre el tema, se extiende esa categoría proponiendo la existencia del binomio condiciones y servicios generales de la producción, como un concepto más adecuado para comprender las aglomeraciones metropolitanas contemporáneas. En la primera parte de la obra se analiza la evolución de dicha categoría dentro de la teoría del capital, su desarrollo histórico mundial como andamiaje infraestructural, así como su definición, tipología y características. En la segunda parte se inicia un estudio empírico sobre el vínculo de la infraestructura con la competitividad urbana y, principalmente, la cuestión de su financiamiento en el caso de la Ciudad de México.
The ageing of society does not stop at company owners. More and more companies have to be handed over to the new generation. This process is a challenge for all parties involved. The support of business transfer assistance is just as essential for the European economy as the promotion of start-ups because both are critical to the development of the European economy. Over 450.000 firms with over two million jobs are transferred to a new owner in the EU-28 each year. Around one-third of these transfers fail, and the companies are closed. The future growth and sustainability of innovative companies in the Baltic Sea Region are severely limited by failed business transfers. Furthermore, due to a lack of available and appropriate successors, many firms are liquidated rather than transferred. This publication is part of the project INBETS (www.inbets.eu), highlights the background to the current situation of business transfers in the Baltic Sea Region, and proposes a policy program to promote business successions and open up new target groups of potential successors.
