Dr. Paul Joire's “Psychical and Supernormal Phenomena” explores purported examples of and experiments proving paranormal phenomena including levitation, lucid dreaming, telepathy, psychokenesis, and more throughout history and from around the world. These uncanny cases will interest those with a penchant for the preternatural, and will provide the reader with a valuable insight into the Victorian obsession with the unexplainable. Contents include: “Psychical Phenomena in General”, “Externalisation of Sensibility”, “Spontaneous Phenomena—Multiple Personality and Abnormal Consciousness—Abnormal Faculties in Hypnotic Subjects”, “Abnormal Dreams”, “Phenomena Observed among the Orientals”, “Phenomena of Lucidity, Motricity, and Projection of the Double Observes in Fakirs or Oriental Sorcerers”, etc. Many vintage books such as this are becoming increasingly scarce and expensive. It is with this in mind that we are republishing this volume now in an affordable, modern, high-quality edition complete with the original text and artwork.

The four volume masterwork begins with a history of Abhidharma literature and covers a vast array of subjects from a Buddhist viewpoint. Some of these subjects are Buddhist cosmology and the process of rebirth, karma and the Buddhist ethical theory, mental defilements, causes of suffering and the path to enlightenment, the supernatural powers of a Buddha, a taxonomy of meditative states and a refutation of the existence of soul. This is the fourth of 4 volumes.

This book offers a systematic and radical introduction to the Buddhist roots of Pātañjala-yoga, or the Yoga system of Patañjali. By examining each of 195 aphorisms (sūtras) of the Yogasūtra and discussing the Yogabhāṣya, it shows that traditional and popular views on Pātañjala-yoga obscure its true nature. The book argues that Patañjali’s Yoga contains elements rooted in both orthodox and heterodox philosophical traditions, including Sāṅkhya, Jaina and Buddhist thought. With a fresh translation and a detailed commentary on the Yogasūtra, the author unearths how several of the terms, concepts and doctrines in Patañjali’s Yoga can be traced to Buddhism, particularly the Abhidharma Buddhism of Vasubandhu and the early Yogācāra of Asaṅga. The work presents the Yogasūtra of Patañjali as a synthesis of two perspectives: the metaphysical perspective of Sāṅkhya and the empirical–psychological perspective of Buddhism. Based on a holistic understanding of Yoga, the study explores key themes of the text, such as meditative absorption, means, supernormal powers, isolation, Buddhist conceptions of meditation and the interplay between Sāṅkhya and Buddhist approaches to suffering and emancipation. It further highlights several new findings and clarifications on textual interpretation and discrepancies. An important intervention in Indian and Buddhist philosophy, this book opens up a new way of looking at the Yoga of Patañjali in the light of Buddhism beyond standard approaches and will greatly interest scholars and researchers of Buddhist studies, Yoga studies, Indian philosophy, philosophy in general, literature, religion and comparative studies, Indian and South Asian Studies and the history of ideas.

Rhythm was the first expression of cardiac activity which fell under man's obser vation, and the heart beat has always represented the very essence of life itself as it accelerates or slows during moments of rest, effort, joy and pain until it comes to a halt at the moment of death. Undoubtedly the heart beat was, for a considerable time, the only semiological element by which man could interpret the dysfunctions of the organism. Even after thousands of years, research into the alterations of cardiac rhythm still holds a certain fascination, although modern methods and sophisticated devices have changed the approach to such studies. Only about ten years ago, the in terpretation of arrhythmias was obtained by a standard electrocardiogram to which experimental findings on animals were still arbitrarily applied. On the other hand, the achievement of diagnostic decisions was of little importance outside the sphere of pure intellectual speculation since valid therapeutical treatments were lacking. At present, by means of electrophysiological investigations, one can verify and check 'in situ' the different forms and mechanisms through which rhythm and conduction disorders are manifested. Thus, achieving such a methodology which may be defined as a 'functional biopsy', we are allowed to put forward more accurate therapeutic indications now available using both pharmacological and electrical treatment.

This monograph had its genesis in a workshop on the specific conduction held in the spring of 1975. The meeting was organized to discuss present knowledge on structure and function of the cardiac specialized tissues with emphasis on their clinical implications. Since much new information was presented, the participants agreed to prepare manuscripts and make their material available for publication. This has resulted in a book in which the cardiac specialized tissues are discussed by different specialists: the electron-microscopist, anatomist, pathologist, physiologist, physicist and clinician. Apart from their interest in the cardiac conduction system the participants shared the opinion that their contribu tion should be relevant to the understanding and treatment of patients with cardiac arrhythmias. The book should be useful for the clinician, the morphologist and the physio logist. The workshop took place at the University Department of Cardiology, Wilhelmina Gasthuis, Amsterdam, The Netherlands. This is the home ground of one of the most outstanding electro cardiologists of our time, Dr. Dirk Durrer. By pairing genius and originality with endless fund of energy and dogged persistence he made several important contributions to modern cardiac electrophysiology. In recent years he created a cardio logical institute where workers from various disciplines cooperate in the study and treat ment of cardiac disease. Several of his pupils participated in the workshop and contributed to this volume. In appreciation and thankfulness we want to dedicate this book to Dr. Dirk Durrer.

"Citizens should read Taxing Ourselves before casting their votes in local, state, and national elections. Politicians should read Taxing Ourselves before taxing us." —Richard C. Schiming, Business Library Review To follow the debate over tax reform, the interested citizen is forced to choose between misleading sound bites and academic treatises. Taxing Ourselves bridges the gap between the two by presenting in clear nontechnical language the key issues in tax reform: who should pay taxes, how taxes affect the economy, and whether to reform or replace the current tax system. The authors discuss various alternative proposals in detail, including the flat tax and the sales tax, but they are not advocates for any of them; instead, they provide readers with the knowledge and the tools—including an informative overview of the U.S. tax system and an invaluable voter's guide to the tax policy debate—to make their own informed choices about how we should tax ourselves. The third edition of this popular guide has been extensively revised and updated to cover all changes in tax laws through May 2003 and to reflect the most recent research and relevant data. It also provides new or expanded treatment of issues in the current debate, including tax cuts and whether they stimulate the economy, savings incentives, double taxation of corporate income, the estate tax, corporate tax shelters, and the economic and political effects of budget deficits.
